What teachers really want for back to school supplies

What teachers really want, but won't ask for! #teachers #school

It’s that time of year again when our kids head back to school. Parents settle into a normal routine, and forget to pack lunches for the first day. Oh wait, is that just me? One of the things I stress out about is meeting our new teachers. It can be challenging to get to know a teacher in the few minutes or seconds you might see them each day, if you even get to see them each day.

What do teachers really want on their back-to-school shopping list.

As a parent, I want to know what will help our teacher have the best school year. I don’t want them worrying about spending their own money on things that we can help provide. But what do you get for them? I’ll happily bring in Kleenex and Clorox Wipes. But what do they really need? continued

Fear of Running Out (of water)

Ever since I cut way back on drinking soda and other sweetened drinks, I have been on a quest for more water. You guys know, I talk about this endlessly around here. When my body gets accustomed to ingesting lots of water (as it should be) I notice the ill effects when I don’t drink enough water.

Since eliminating sweetened beverages, I’m feeling a lot better. I have a lot more energy and don’t have that afternoon lag I used to have. Most of the time, I opt for soda water instead. Just by replacing a single 12-ounce, 140 calorie sugar-sweetened beverage with water each day for a year can cut more than 50,000 calories from your diet.

Crafting with Perler beads

Crafting with Perler Beads

I walked in my daughters playroom today and found a huge mess on her craft table. Beads were everywhere. But before I could lose my mind, I noticed how many really awesome things she’s created with Perler beads. If you haven’t had the pleasure of using these beads, just wait. They are tiny little things that I have the worst time getting ahold of. But for little fingers? They’re fantastic.

Peeler bead kit

She spends hours making fun little bead art and gives them away to anyone who will take one. On our recent home remodel, she made individual gifts for all the guys working on our house who have since become family. She’s taken these to school on her “share day” and now has her entire class hooked on making fun bead art. Some of these kids really knock it out of the park with their original designs. continued

Zucchini-Blueberry Cake with Lemon Buttercream Frosting

zucchini-blueberry cake

If you’re a gardener, or know someone who is, you most likely have a ton of zucchini hanging around like we do. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem. My kids love zucchini bread and have been gobbling it up by the loafs. But I really wanted something more dessert-like… maybe a cake! continued

Do you own a gun?

june4

I recently came across a Facebook page about a child who was playing at a friends house after school one day. When the parents dropped their daughter off at school that morning, they never imagined it to be the last time they’d see their 13 year old daughter alive. You see, the daughter and her friend had found a loaded gun in a kitchen cupboard and it ended badly. Very badly.

When we moved last year, we knew we’d be starting over, and getting to know new friends and other parents. We agreed that we’d ask fellow parents if they had guns in their homes before we let our daughters go to any playdates at those homes.

Did we do that?

No.

Do we think about it?

All the time. continued

Announcing: Frozen – Live at Disneyland

Frozen

Next week I will be heading up to Disneyland for the world premiere of Frozen – Live at the Hyperion theater. This is a much anticipated premiere as it will be replacing Aladdin. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill as “Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” ran for 13 years.

Frozen, the musical, will open at the Hyperion Theater in the Disney California Adventure Park on May 27, 2016. The new Frozen production is based off of the 2013 animated feature film and the creators have worked hard at keeping the magic alive in the theatrical performance.

The 1,873-seat Hyperion theater is the perfect venue for such a powerful musical. This theater was made for something spectacular, I think Walt Disney Imagineering made sure this was going to be it. I can’t wait to get a first glance at the performance and will tell you all about it when I get back.

Disclosure: I will be attending the blogger preview night to provide you with the most up to date information about Disneyland. Tickets were provide. All opinions are that of GUG.

Here’s a complete review of Frozen – Live at the Hyperion.

Saying goodbye

bubba

A couple of weeks ago, we lost you, Jackson. Last year we found out you had cancer, and it was a rough go initially. But you’ve been in great health since we had a tumor removed on your leg. So it was a shock to us that we had to say goodbye to you so quickly this time.

We miss you. A lot. More than I thought we ever would. Our house is quiet without you here, even with two loud, playful girls running around. No sighs. No rattling of your collar and flapping of your ears as you shake your head. No pitter patter of your feet as you bound up and down the stairs. The silence here is deafening. continued
