We’re expanding to Walt Disney World

Ever since I started writing about Disney, I never felt like I had enough experience to talk about Walt Disney World. We’ve been to WDW a total of 14 days over a ten year period. Not really enough to get a feel for the ins and outs. Or provide helpful tips.

WDWIt’s with great excitement that we get to welcome Eric, Rachel, and then entire Cox clan to our Growing Up Goofy family. The “CoxClan7” will be sharing their Walt Disney World trips and tips with us. continued

Changes to Disney Guest Assistant Card Coming Soon

characters

For those of you who are familiar with the Disney Guest Assistant Card, you might want to be prepared for the upcoming changes. Disney has always been committed to accommodating Guests with disabilities and wanted you to know about the upcoming changes.  On October 9th, Disney will be replacing the Guest Assistance Card with a new Disability Access Service Card.

We personally don’t have much experience with the GAC, so I’m not able to elaborate on the current program. Also, Disney hasn’t released exactly what the new program will entail. I will keep you up to date as more information comes in. continued

Celebrating your special day at Disneyland

So many of us travel to the Disney Parks to celebrate a special occasion. Whether it be a birthday, anniversary, or a “first visit,” Disney wants to celebrate with you.

We’ve been celebrating birthdays at Disneyland for a few years now. Both my husband and daughter have been lucky to get a few extra treats because they were wearing their birthday buttons.

At Disneyland, head into Town Hall and get your celebration button from Guest Relations. Throughout the day, you’ll have both Cast Members and park guests wishing you a happy birthday or congratulating your special day. Emma was thrilled when a cupcake came to the table for her 3rd birthday. Who knew the Mad Hatter could sing “Happy Birthday” so well!

On our last trip, my husband was very happy he left his birthday button on. You just never know who is watching. We ordered beignets from the Mint Julep, and were pleasantly surprised to find a few extra treats of powdery goodness in our bag.  A little extra pixie dust goes a long way!

Throwback Thursday: First trip to WDW

We are a Disneyland family true and true. But I was looking at pictures of my first trip to Disney World with Doug. I remember it was really hot that day. We were both tired and sweaty by the end of that first day. Both of us grew up loving Disneyland and WDW. It’s no surprise, we keep that tradition alive by taking our kids on a regular basis.

We were so young. With very bad glasses. We were stuck together then, and now. Happy Throwback Thursday!

If you have vintage pictures you’d like to share, visit Catching Up With Kate to see more great posts about Throwback Thursday, Disney addition. BTW, the date in the photo was wrong, my “future” in-laws at the time had the wrong date on their camera. I believe this was June of 2005.

runDisney Marathons

Are you a runner? I’m certainly not, but I’m a huge Disney fan and I’m willing to try anything once. When I saw several people talking about runDisney, I had no idea what they were talking about. It wasn’t long after I heard about these events, I found myself signed up for my first Disneyland 1/2 Marathon Weekend. We’ll be running the 5k just over 49 days from now. Gulp.

Disney has an entire running franchise called runDisney. They host full marathons to family fun runs several weekends each year at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Parks. If you’re a runner, this is certainly the place where your running dreams will come true.

A few days ago, Disney announced they’ll be having an additional run take place at Disneyland, The Tinker Bell 10k. This run will take place in January during the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend. So for those of us who have, or will, conquer the 5k…this is the one for you!

These events have limited availability and sell out quickly. I recommend signing up for their email alerts so you’re ready to register. These events are so much fun, I don’t want you to miss out!

Get a D23 membership for free

d23I’ve been a member of D23, The official Disney Fan Club,  for a couple of years. I love the magazine and the discounts. However, I don’t have a lot of time anymore and have a hard time justifying the renewal fee.

I’m excited to see a free membership is now available. Yep, free. Here’s what you can expect from the free membership.

Have you been to Disneyland’s Silhouette Studio?

We’ve walked down Main Street, USA countless times. Each time we pass the Silhouette Studio, I think to myself that we should have Emma’s portrait done. But we pass it by each time, in a hurry to get to something further into the park. I can’t believe it took several years of going to Disneyland before we finally stopped in this cute little shop. Little did I know, in less than a minute of hand-cutting black paper, I’d see a beautiful silhouette of my daughter, perfectly frozen in time.

The Silhouette Studio is a timeless classic on Main Street. They’ve been around for almost 55 years. Each silhouette is hand-cut. Yes, hand cut in less than a minute. It’s amazing to see. I can’t even draw a picture of my daughter. How someone can cut out a realistic-looking silhouette of her so quickly with basic scissors and paper is beyond me. continued

Disneyland trip: 40″ and counting

We’re starting to relish our Disney trips. This is the last year that we’ll be able to go whenever we want. Emma will start school in the Fall, making it challenging to go anytime except outside of school days. We wanted our next trip to be special, since both girls were sick during our last visit and unable to enjoy much.

A new world opened up for us on our most recent trip. Emma is FINALLY over the 40″ mark. She’s well over the mark at 40 3/4 inches tall. This means she actually bumps her head on each of the height checkers when ride attendants ask to measure her height, drawing the obvious, “she’s good to go” from each attendant.

Should I buy a Disneyland annual pass?

dlpassportWe live in Northern California, about a 6 hour drive to Disneyland. For us, it was an easy choice to buy annual passes to Disneyland. After two trips, our passes were paid for. You might be wondering if annual passes are right for you, and if you would save in the long run.

If you know you will be in Southern California, ask yourself if a trip to Disneyland is a possibility. How many trips will it take for you to pay for your annual passes? If the cost will be more for individual trips, consider the annual pass option. continued

Avoiding sore feet at Disneyland

dlrailroadThere’s a lot of walking involved when you’re at Disneyland. One of the best ways to avoid those aching feet is to wear comfortable shoes. Even with great shoes, the best of us still get tired of walking, but we want to push on. If your feet start to ache, get off them and rest. There are tons of benches scattered throughout each park if you’d just like to sit and people-watch. There are also several things you can do to get off your feet and still have fun. continued
